Before you head outside today – are you fully covered?

Your skin is always working to protect you from a harsh environment, but how well are you protecting it? May is Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month and, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, there have been more skin cancer cases over the past three decades than every other type of cancer combined.

Skin cancer is not difficult to prevent. Sunscreen is one of the easiest and most effective ways to keep yourself guarded against harmful UV rays, but it won't work if you're always missing a spot. Watch out for these vulnerable but forgettable areas:

Behind your knees – Because most people bend their legs while applying sunscreen, the skin behind the knees is often overlooked or not thoroughly covered.

The back of your neck – When you apply lotion to your back, don't forget to extend it all the way up your neck until you reach your hairline.

Around your ears – The area in front of your ears and behind your ears is often left uncovered. Include this while doing your face.

The top of your feet – This is an important area to hit if you are going barefoot or wearing sandals.

Under your straps – This skin may be covered now, but bathing suits and tank tops can shift as you move.

Your scalp – You may not be able to apply sunscreen here, but you can wear a hat or brush you hair in a way that covers your skin.

Even one severe sunburn can increase your risk of skin cancer. If you notice any abnormalities on your skin, call our free Consult-a-Nurse® service at 1-888-256-7692. We can provide a physician referral and schedule an appointment.

Lower your stroke risk by keeping your blood pressure under control.

According to the National Stroke Association, high blood pressure is the number one risk factor for stroke. More than 75 percent of stroke patients will have a high blood pressure of over 140/90. If you have high blood pressure, the American Heart Association warns that it could increase your chances of experiencing a stroke by:

Weakening Your Arteries – When an artery is weak, it is more likely to burst under pressure. A stroke could occur if the weakened arteries are found in the brain.

Clogging Your Arteries – Obstructions in an artery could affect blood flow to the brain, resulting in an ischemic stroke.

Rupturing a Blood Vessel – A hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel begins bleeding in or around the brain.

Nicknamed the "silent killer," high blood pressure is a dangerous condition that exhibits no symptoms and can only be detected by a test. To protect yourself from stroke, make sure you are getting regular screenings. If your blood pressure is higher than 120/80, talk to your doctor about the best way to lower your numbers. Medication may able to help, and lifestyle changes may include:

 Creating a regular fitness routine

 Limiting your sodium intake

Adding more high-fiber fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to your diet

 Practicing stress management techniques

It’s never too early or too late to get serious about your health. No matter what your age, today is the best day for women everywhere to start making beneficial lifestyle changes.

If you’re in your 20s…
You need to start an exercise routine now. Many women wait until their metabolism slows down to start making physical activity a priority, but beginning this habit in your 20s will reduce your risk of osteoporosis when you’re older, and get you on the right track for breast cancer and heart disease prevention.

Women in their 20s should also schedule annual pap smears with their gynecologist, beginning either at age 21 or when they become sexually active – whichever comes first.

If you’re in your 30s…
Your eating habits today could result in stiff, achy joints in the future. Fish is one of the most effective foods for keeping arthritis at bay. Women in their 30s can prevent the deterioration of cartilage, which eventually leads to arthritis, by making fish and other sources of omega-3 fatty acids a regular part of their diet.

If you’re in your 40s…
It’s time to start strength training! Women typically experience muscle loss starting in their 40s, which can lead to a slower metabolism and unhealthy weight gain. Mammograms are also an important healthcare addition for women in their 40s. Talk to your doctor about including one in your annual gynecologist visit.

If you’re in your 50s or beyond…
Yoga is a great exercise for those in their 50s or older. It helps women to retain their strength and balance, while also relieving common symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes or mood swings. Women over 50 should also talk with their doctor about colon cancer testing. Depending on which type of test is used, screenings may be necessary every one to ten years.

Celebrate Mother’s Day along with your health and wellness by joining Aventura Hospital from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 9th at the Nordstrom Aventura Mall. We are planning a panel discussion with healthcare experts as well as free makeovers and a chance to win a gift basket when you enter our raffle. Visit our website for more information and call 888-256-7692 to RSVP.

While type 1 diabetes is a genetic condition that is diagnosed during adolescence, type 2 diabetes has several risk factors and tends to appear later in life. While you may be in the clear for type 1, type 2 is still a serious disease that can lead to life-threatening complications if left unmanaged. According to the American Diabetes Association, the following factors can help you assess your risk of developing the condition sometime down the road.

Your age – In most cases, type 2 diabetes will not develop in patients under 45 – but keep in mind that your lifestyle habits at any age can affect whether you experience the disease in the future.

Your gender – While both genders are susceptible to diabetes, it is more common in men. Women who have experienced gestational diabetes during a pregnancy may be at a higher risk.

Your family history – If diabetes runs in your family, your risk is higher.

Your race – Certain races have a higher percentage of diabetics. People with the highest risk include African Americans, Hispanics, American Indians, and Pacific Islanders.

Your blood pressure – The higher your blood pressure, the higher your diabetes risk will be.

Your activity level – A sedentary lifestyle will increase your risk level.

Your BMI – If you are overweight or obese, your risk for diabetes will rise.

Aventura’s Diabetes Program provides the education, resources, support, and medical care you need to protect your health. Learn more about the program at our website or give us a call at (305) 682-7266.

World Meningitis Day is April 24th. Have you been vaccinated yet?

Meningitis is a serious disease that can lead to loss of hearing, learning disabilities, brain damages, or death. According to the Confederation of Meningitis Organisations, 1.7 million people contract meningitis every year and 170,000 meningitis-related fatalities occur. Fortunately, prevention is possible! A vaccine exists that can greatly reduce a person's chances of experiencing the disease. Is the vaccination right for you or your family?

	For Infants
In most cases, infants and young children do not need the vaccine. There are exceptions for kids who who travel or live in high-risk areas, or those with other medical conditions that make them especially vulnerable. In these situations, the vaccine may be given at nine months.

	For Adolescents
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the ideal age for the meningitis vaccine is 11 or 12 years old, with a booster shot at 16. The majority of meningitis cases occur between the ages of 16 and 21.

	For Adults
Since meningitis is not as common among those over 21, the vaccine is not recommended for everyone. There are certain situations and environments that may increase an adult's chance of contracting meningitis. If you meet the following criteria, ask your doctor about getting vaccinated.

You live in a college dorm.

You live in close military quarters.

You are traveling or living in an area where meningitis is more widespread.

You have a damaged or removed spleen.

 You have terminal complement deficiency.

You work in microbiology and are often exposed to Neisseria meningitidis.

Our Consult-a-Nurse® service can provide you with a free physician referral and help you make an appointment to get your meningitis vaccine. Give us a call any time at 1-888-256-7692. Our lines are always open.

You’ll be thankful if an emergency occurs.

There are few situations more stressful than heading to the emergency room. The uncertainty, the paperwork, the waiting room – there’s got to be an easier way! At Aventura Hospital and Medical Center, there is. We strive to make every emergency room visit go as smoothly as possible. Here are just a few ways we’re working to serve you best during an emergency.

Wait Times
We want to make those long ER wait times a thing of the past. How are we doing? You can find out by visiting our website. We always have the average wait time of the last four hours posted. Although waits often depend on the severity of your condition, these numbers can give you a good idea of what you might expect in our ER.

ED Kiosk
We have several new technologies that help us avoid the usual stack of paperwork required to check-in. The ED kiosk will scan your driver’s license and allow you to detail your concern or complaint. The machine will automatically attach this information to your digital patient file and transport it to a triage nurse.

iNotify
Patients with smartphones or tablets can check-in before they even arrive at our facilities. Download the iTriage app and use the iNotify function to let us know you’re on your way. We may be ready and waiting for you from the moment you walk in.

You never know when an emergency may occur, but you can still plan for one. Where would you go if the unthinkable occurred? Learn more about the expert emergency care we provide at our website or call our Emergency Department at (305) 682-7000.

Lymphedema patients can still live comfortable, normal lives with the help of a regular management program.

April is Occupational Therapy Month! One way the therapists at our rehab center help serve patients is through lymphedema management. Lymphedema is an uncomfortable disease that often arises after breast surgery. It affects the lymph system, resulting in a blockage that causes painful swelling in the arms or legs. To keep the swelling down and minimize discomfort, the U.S. National Library of Medicine recommends these steps.

Compression – This is usually done with bandages that redirect the fluid build-up back into the body. The bandages are wrapped tightly around the hands or feet and then progressively made looser as they extend up the limb. A therapist can provide this treatment, or he may show you how to do it on your own.

Drainage – Manual lymph drainage is achieved by a therapeutic massage that reduces swelling by pushing fluid away from the blockage and toward lymph nodes that are performing adequately. This massage technique is not recommended for all patients, especially if they are battling active cancer or heart disease.

Exercises – With the help of a physical therapist, you can create an easy exercise routine that both prevents build-up and reduces any present swelling.

	Infections
If you notice signs of an infection, the National Lymphedema Network warns you against continuing any of the above treatments before seeing a doctor and beginning antibiotics.

	Surgery
There are surgical options for lymphedema patients. These treatment methods are not safe for everyone and further lymphedema management may be necessary even after the procedure. Ask your doctor about removing lymphatic tissue or liposuction.

If you're struggling to manage your lymphedema, Aventura's Outpatient Rehabilitation Center can help you gain control over your symptoms and return to a normal life. Contact us at (305) 937-5802.

Need a little something to tide you over until dinner? Don't let your snacks ruin your diet!

Snacking gets a bad rap, but it doesn't have to be your downfall. You just need to make the right choices. There is nothing wrong with enjoying a quick, healthy bite to eat during your work day. The right snack will give you extra fuel and keep you from succumbing to unhealthy cravings when dinnertime finally rolls around. Try one of these five nutritional snacks the next time your stomach starts rumbling.

Nuts and seeds – Snacks with a little protein will help fill you up without requiring large portion sizes. The United States Department of Agriculture recommends a handful of unsalted nuts and seeds.

Veggies and dip – Carrots, celery, broccoli, or cauliflower with a little fat-free salad dressing or hummus could give you a little boost and power you through your afternoon slump.

Popcorn – According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, three cups of popcorn sprinkled with three tablespoons of parmesan cheese makes an easy snack under 200 calories.

Yogurt – Even healthy snacks become problematic when consumed in large portions. The boundaries are clear when enjoying a single serving cup of yogurt.

Whole grain crackers – Add a couple slices of cheese and you'll have enough protein and fiber to stay full and energized until dinner.

March is National Nutrition Month! It's time to start making healthy eating choices for your body. If you are on a special diet because of diabetes or another disease, Aventura Hospital & Medical Center can help you adjust to your new lifestyle with new recipes and ideas for healthy snacks. If you would like to speak with someone about managing your diet and nutrition, call our free Consult-A-Nurse® service to schedule an appointment or for a physician referral.

Colon cancer patients, stock your kitchen with these healthy food choices.

When you’re fighting against colon cancer, you can do more than just undergo radiation therapy or chemotherapy. There are many supplemental treatments that can give you the boost you need to achieve a successful recovery. One of the most basic and effective natural methods is to maintain a healthy diet. This may sound easier than it really is. Your primary treatments will often affect your appetite, making you feel nauseous or too weak to eat. No matter how you feel, it’s important to give your body enough fuel to keep fighting each day. Keep these foods at the top of your list while planning meals.

Soups – Foods that are mostly liquid, such as soup, may be easiest for you to keep down and digest. Make or find soups that are low on sodium, high on veggies, beans, or lentils, and that feature lean meats rather than beef.

Juice – Fruits can be an important weapon against colorectal cancer. Fresh-squeezed juices, without any added sugars, can fulfill this requirement even when you aren’t up for eating anything solid.

Whole grains – Breads and pastas are often a safe bet when you’re struggling with nausea. Make sure you are choosing whole wheat options.

Avocados – The National Cancer Institute recommends this mildly-flavored food that packs in a lot of calories without upsetting the stomach. Some research indicates it may improve the health of those battling colon cancer.

Peanut butter – Your favorite childhood sandwich ingredient is an easy source of protein and energy for cancer patients.

Get outside to exercise today.

You don’t need an expensive gym membership or an extra room filled with fancy exercise equipment to stay in shape! Head outside and get some fresh air and vitamin D while you work your muscles and get your heart pumping for free! These ideas can get you started.

Jogging – You don’t need a treadmill! The sidewalks near your house don’t cost a dime and won’t use one volt of electricity. Get to know your neighborhood better by heading for a daily run every morning.

Biking – Get two things done at once! Next time you need to pick up something small from the store, ditch your car and ride your bike to the local market.

Hiking – Spending time in nature can help relieve stress and boost your creativity. Find local hiking trails that you can explore this weekend.

Swimming – Spring is right around the corner and the warm weather may beckon you to stay in your comfortably air-conditioned home. You can still enjoy the great outdoors when you exercise by swimming in a pool or at the beach.

Kayaking – Arms need a workout? Try renting a kayak for the day and paddling against the waves in the ocean. We promise your biceps will be pleasantly sore in the morning.

Sports – Whether you’re hitting a tennis ball back and forth with your spouse, or your kids wants to play a game of soccer at the park, participating in a friendly sports game is an enjoyable way to get active outside.
